His work has helped reshape the conversation around how we think about detoxification, energy, inflammation, resilience, and healthy aging.

In this episode, we explore the root cause of aging, this amazing peptide glutathione, and how it works to combat oxidative stress in the body, and how Dr. Patel’s patented delivery method gets it inside the cell so it can work in our bodies. He also shares the amazing story of his own father and how this molecule helped him live fully until the very end. Dr. Patel has an exuberance for life that is contagious. You’re going to learn a lot and also enjoy this fascinating conversation. Let’s dive in.

Fully Alive: Unlocking the secrets to your healthier, happier, longer life - Zach Gurick | Dr. Nayan Patel | Oxidative Stress

Dr. Patel, thank you so much for being with us. This is exciting. I’m a big fan and so thrilled that we got to have this conversation. I’m also excited for myself to learn from you and for our readers to learn all the things you’re going to share with us. Thank you so much for being here.

It’s my pleasure. Thank you.

I’d love to start off like I always do. I’m always fascinated by how people end up in these roles and positions. How did you end up here doing the work that you’re doing? You’re now the longevity pharmacist. How did you get to be that? Take us back 20 years or 30 years. What led one thing to another to where you are now?

Redefining the Role of a Pharmacist

Once I became a pharmacist many years ago, I knew the traditional pharmacy role was not suitable for my career because the model was based upon literally disease management, managing people’s problems instead of getting rid of the problems. When my family started asking me questions, they said, “ I have this issue. How do I get rid of it?” I said, “This is going to be for the rest of your life. We can just manage it for you.”

After telling it many times, I realized this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I quickly started looking into the industry and said, “What else I could do with my knowledge and how I could help people?” I started becoming a compounding pharmacist. Initially, you become a self-proclaimed expert. You just tell them, “ I’m an expert in compounding. Ask me questions.” The answer is, “What’s the question again?” That’s how I started. I could make anything you wanted, just tell me what you want. Initially, many years ago, people were looking for anti-aging medicine.

I couldn’t understand it. I said, “What is anti-aging medicine? What does that mean?” They’re like, “I hear there are some hormones out there that can help me live longer.” I said, “Hormones are there to help you have a better quality of life.” It’s not necessarily going to increase your lifespan, but it’s going to improve your quality of life. That’s where my whole journey started. I quickly found out the only way I could help people live longer was to stop them from dying. It’s an easier concept to think about. I said, “The only way you live longer is if you don’t die.”

What’s the number one cause of death? I went to the rabbit hole and found out the number one cause of death in this ear has led to oxidative stress. I know it’s a big word. Everybody asks, “What is oxidative stress? What do you do with it?” I’m telling you. The oxidation happens every single day of your life because you breathe oxygen. Your body uses oxygen and produces its byproducts. If you want to see a visual of what that looks like, consider a nail in the backyard. It will eventually get rusted.

The Internal Rusting Process

If you don’t do anything about it, the rust will crumble the whole iron. The process of rusting initially is called oxidation. If you don’t do anything about it, eventually that rust will literally make the nail crumble and go away. That’s called oxidative stress. Your body’s rusting from inside every single day, and that’s how you age.

My job was, if I can stop that oxidation process or oxidative stress issue, I can increase the lifespan. It’s easy for me to discuss these things because I have spent my whole life working on just one molecule. Our body produces something called glutathione to reduce oxidative stress. For 140 years, we have known about glutathione, but we could not get it inside our body. Now, we have something that can achieve that.

I have spent my whole life trying to figure out how I can help every single individual on this planet to live healthier, increase their lifespan, not by artificially boosting life, but by helping the body not die because of oxidative stress-related diseases. This is my lifelong journey. I’m here and we are discussing this. I can break it down into whatever form you want.

Thank you for sharing that and for doing the work over many years. As you said, multiple decades, to get to where you are and to truly understand this molecule and how to deliver it. Not only inside ourselves, but also inside our mitochondria. I love that visual you shared with us about a nail rusting. It’s scary to think that’s happening inside our bodies every day. The same process is happening, at least.

Can we break that down a little bit and help our readers understand? Mitochondria use oxygen to create ATP, and in doing so, they release reactive oxidative species. This leads to oxidative stress because those species need to be soaked up by glutathione, but then that gets depleted. Can you walk us through that process to help us understand more deeply?

The biggest visuals I can tell you are what they call age spots or liver spots on your face, arms, and all over the place. Sometimes, they are referred to as sun damage spots. Excessive sun exposure causes spots on your face, arms, and body. All of this is oxidation. For instance, your cholesterol, your lipids, and your oil inside your body are getting oxidized, getting rancid. These oxidation processes will eventually lead to brown spots, age spots, and similar issues. That’s a visual example. The whole process starts from this. We need oxygen to survive. We need oxygen to produce ATP, as you said earlier.

Mitochondria use oxygen and convert it into ATP. ATP is the powerhouse of energy for your whole body. Without ATP, you have absolutely no energy, are completely fatigued, and there’s nothing you can do. We need this ATP to perform daily body functions. However, the byproduct of this ATP production is called reactive oxygen species. It’s a charged oxygen molecule that is damaging the body from inside. It’s like every single second is rusting the nails from inside.

Whatever you see on your face on the exterior, the organs inside are already getting damaged ahead of time. By the time it becomes visible on the surface, your whole body is already oxidizing from inside. The issue is that when you see something on the surface, it serves as a visual cue that you have to take charge of your body and try to reduce oxidative stress. Our body naturally produces glutathione to do that. As you start aging, production goes down, typically starting around age 20 to 29 years old.

If you look at the literature, scientists and researchers worldwide are quite baffled because around age 20 to 29 is the very first-time people are observing their aging process accelerating at a speed above their chronological age. Every year, you’re aging one year. At the age of 28 or 29, you’re aging slower than your chronological age. Around age 28 or 29, it matches up. This means that every year, you’re aging one year or even more. People could not figure that portion out.

The only thing I know that’s going down is also the glutathione levels. Your genetic mutations are increasing. Your aging processes are increasing. Your feelings of fatigue, tiredness, brain fog, and body functions are hitting a plateau. You have to work hard to gain muscle mass. Everything starts around age 28 or 29. Usually, people do not do anything about it because guess what they’re blaming? They have a new job. They just graduated from college. Maybe they got married. Maybe they have kids. Life happens.

Traditional medicine often focuses on managing symptoms, but true longevity requires getting to the root cause of the problem.

What they call life is happening for them at the age of 28 or 29. In reality, everything is coming together. The body is not able to keep up with the demands because the demands are still there when you’re 21, but your body is able to keep up with the demands. It is like, how do you explain that a person who is ten years old can eat Twinkies, donuts and pasta and still grow up like a big human being? Yet the same person at the age of 45 can eat the same diet, and all he is doing is aging himself up to the wazoo.

It is crazy to think about those kinds of things, but that is pretty much how the body’s mechanisms are. One thing we notice is the aging process is starting very early in your life. It is starting to change reactions as to how the body is slowly deteriorating. It is not going to show up on a blood test or a body scan or some evaluation until the age of 40 or 45 in some cases. What happens is, it takes a while because the body is so resilient. It is trying to compensate for every little problem we have.

Once it’s done, compensation is when you start seeing a rise in some blood test or scan that shows something’s wrong. It’s usually about 10-15 years too late, and this is for healthy people. Imagine an unhealthy person. We are seeing people at the age of 20 or 25 having diabetes. Starting at the age of 5 or 6, they have a very poor diet to begin with, and they’re having an issue by then anyway.

The Decline of Glutathione

This is something that is changing the whole dynamic of how human evolution is going to be in the future. In normal cases, between 20 and 29 is the first time you see a dip in the glutathione levels, a rise in the oxidation markers. Oxidative stress is increasing, and that starts a cascade of reactions for the onset of diseases by the age of 40 or 45.

To recap, the reactive oxygen species is the natural byproduct of the mitochondria that are using oxygen to create ATP. I have heard it said before that those reactive oxygen species are going around like a drunk person at a party. They’re spilling their drinks, but essentially, they’re stealing electrons from other molecules, like from proteins, then it causes protein misfolding or other issues, inflammation.

Reactive oxygen species are the beginning of all kinds of issues like inflammation, oxidation of tissues, organs, lipids, and every single thing inside your body. It started to cascade of problems that’s going to end up with some diseases.

Our body produces glutathione, which bonds to those ROS, reactive species, and then flushes them out of the body, right?

It doesn’t bind to them. That’s one thing glutathione does. Glutathione is the only molecule that quenches the electrical charge from reactive oxygen species, making them neutral. Once it’s neutral, even if it’s inside your body, it’s not doing anything. It has no teeth. It cannot do anything for your body. If you think about the antioxidant system, there are three different systems that we have. One is what you can take from outside sources in your food, like vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, spirulina, and all these different products.

There’s some fruit juice you get from the Amazon forest, and there are many other so-called antioxidants. I put all of them in bucket number one. The body produces three enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, GPX for short, superoxide dismutase, SOD for short, and catalase. The three enzymes the body produces also help quench all free radicals and neutralize them. The third thing is that the body produces glutathione.

Glutathione by itself is more powerful than all the enzymes and products from outside sources combined. That’s how powerful one glutathione is. If there is a way to just improve glutathione levels, you can literally eliminate all the vitamins of the world because it doesn’t do much for you.

Why does our body stop producing as much glutathione around 28 or 29 years old? What happens to deplete glutathione production?

To understand that, we must first understand what it takes to make glutathione. To make glutathione, we need three amino acids such as glycine, glutamine, and cysteine, which you get from your diet. That’s the first thing. Second, it needs two enzymes. The body usually produces enzymes in abundance to combine these three amino acids. It requires two molecules of ATP for energy and one molecule of NAD for electron transfers.

If anything is missing or the supply is reduced, the body produces less glutathione. This is usually due to ATP, because ATP demand gets higher as you age due to increased protein development. The body needs a lot of ATP because you’re doing many activities. You’re thinking more. You’re walking more. You’re not sleeping as much as before, and you’re getting sleep-deprived. The number of ATP molecules reduces, and that’s usually the biggest problem.

If you’re looking for longevity medicine, guess what? Cheap. Sleep. Sleep up to ten hours a day and I assure you, there’ll be enough ATP production in your body so you can make enough glutathione. When I tell people, they’ll say, “ I have this ring. I have this bracelet that tracks all my sleep patterns, and I’m doing fine. Why am I still tired?” The next thing to look at is diet. That’s the number one reason why we have that. You can have all the diets in the world, but if you don’t have enough energy, your body cannot produce glutathione.

Why Traditional Supplements Fail

By the way, there are many supplements out there for glutathione, but the body doesn’t absorb any one of them. None. That, to me, was the most astounding portion of this whole research. Glutathione is produced inside your cell membrane, and there is no technology in the world that exists to transport these nutrients through the cell membrane inside your cell. You can take all the vitamins for glutathione in the body, and it will never reach inside your cell membrane.

That’s what you have broken through now. You created a breakthrough technology then. Essentially, you discovered the breakthrough technology that allowed this.

Exactly, the world was discovered. I didn’t create anything. I’m not that smart. I just learned how to use different pieces of the technology and see if I could combine them to deliver glutathione to the cell. When I did that many years ago, it was like an out-of-body experience for me. It was way out of this world. Never been seen before. I couldn’t comprehend the implication of what is going to happen to the medicine of the future. I’m talking about 2007. It was a long time ago. I could not think that far out.

Did you know that your glutathione levels start to dip in your late 20s? Here is why that matters for your health span.

My brain capacity was not going that far out at that time yet. That took me another fourteen years of research trying to figure out what to do with this molecule, how much to give, how often to give, and what results I’m going to get. Am I going to see any results? Am I going to see any side effects? Am I going to see any problems? Can people take it long term? Are the results stagnant or cumulative?

I had so many questions, but not enough answers for all these things. I still have to keep my daytime job because I still have bills to pay, I have kids and a family to run. All these things are still haunting me in the background, but I’m very pleased to say that we have learned a lot in many years. What we can share more about is that our body is so resilient it can reverse many problems, unless it gets to a point where it’s irreversible.

If you get a disease, it becomes irreversible. If you get cancer, it becomes irreversible. If you get heart disease, if you get diabetes, it becomes irreversible. The question is, can I stop you from getting all these diseases in the first place? Can I help your body remove the toxic load? By doing so, can your body regenerate on its own? Glutathione is one of those molecules that gets much praise but in reality, it only does one or two things.

We touched upon the antioxidant benefit, which is great. By the time you wake up and within the first hour, your body is exposed to at least 70 different chemicals that your body has to neutralize, detoxify, and get rid of every day. By the end of the day, you’re exposing yourself to about 300 different chemicals. A lot of chemicals. These are unique molecules that your body has to somehow figure out how to get rid of. The liver is what’s doing all this work for you.

The liver needs help to conjugate because a lot of the stuff is fat soluble. That’s why people are getting bigger and bigger, because people need more fat cells to store all these chemicals. We need to figure out how we can take these fat-soluble chemicals, make them water-soluble, and get rid of them. That’s the biggest job that glutathione aids the liver to do. It works as a master conjugator, conjugating with all these chemicals. It aids the cytochrome P450 enzyme system that detoxifies your liver of all these chemicals.

Once it does that part and reduces the oxidative stress at the same time, the first and second jobs are done for your body. Now your body is completely free and clear to do what? Rejuvenate, regenerate, produce new proteins, produce new cells, build your muscle mass, fix your eyes. Fix every single thing. If you cannot get rid of the oxidation of our species and the chemicals from your liver, it cannot do anything else.

That’s just constantly working on that one problem.

Imagine you have a job to do. You come to your house, and your wife tells you, “ Zach, there are so many holes in the walls. Can you fix them? The roof is leaking. Can you fix that?” “No, call somebody else.” In our body, we cannot call anybody else. The body has to fix everything by itself. Imagine you cannot call anybody else. You have to fix it yourself, but you have a job to do every single day. You have to go, earn money, do things, do that, every single thing.

When you come home, if the house is completely filthy and dirty, you can’t even cook because the kitchen and everything is dirty. Until the basic stuff is taken care of, you cannot work on the big stuff. If you come home and everything is done for you, if you come to a clean house, I have some free time. I’ll get to work and patch up the holes in the walls and fix the roofs and get the plumbing all fixed up. You can do all this work if the basic job that you’re supposed to do every single day is taken care of.

That’s what I’m giving this glutathione for. It’s the basic necessity for your body to detoxify the ROS species, conjugate all the chemicals from your liver, and get rid of them. Once those two things are done, you can literally unleash your human potential to fix all your problems. As of the moment, I don’t think there’s any doctor alive that can diagnose each and every problem you have, but your body can.

This is amazing that you’ve been able to put all this together. This is such a much larger conversation. You’re solving that root cause and those root causes. It seems like you found the one thing that can have that cascade effect on so many other things. Can you tell us a little bit more about how you’re able to get it inside of the cell membrane, inside the mitochondria? Will that have applications across other contexts as well?

The thing is, not everything requires to be that precise. For example, the tripeptide and glutathione. Three amino acids coming together. It’s a peptide. That tripeptide needs to be inside your cell to do the work. For example, you cannot clean your house sitting in your office. There are so many peptides available like insulin. It’s a peptide. Insulin does not reduce sugar levels. It tells your body, “There’s a sugar molecule right there, go get rid of it.”

It’s a messenger. You can sit in your office, make a phone call and call your maid and tell them, “Can you please go and clean my house?” He or she can go and clean your house. That’s the messenger peptide. Glutathione is not a messenger. It needs to be inside your house to do the job. It has to be inside your cell membrane to do the work. Hence, the technology was necessary to get inside the cell membrane. Again, I’m not that smart. I just follow the science.

I was having a hard time getting those cell membranes. I started looking at the research. I asked, “What gets through cell membranes? What does the cell need that it takes from outside?” It needs sugar. It needs sugar to produce ATP, but I cannot give sugar because it’s going to give diabetes. We found a polysaccharide molecule that does not increase your sugar levels. That is cyclic in nature. I can put something else inside it like a Trojan horse, and transport some of the molecules.

Creating the Breakthrough

That’s how we did it. We took a glutathione molecule and put it inside the sugar molecule and got it through the cell membrane. The problem was that the hole was very small. Imagine trying to shove a beach ball through a ring. It’s impossible. I had to reduce the size of the beach ball into a small ring structure so it could get embedded. That took me a few years to figure that portion out because being a tripeptide, a three-dimensional structure is pretty big.

I cannot just squeeze it out. I had to twist it slowly to make sure I did not change the opposite ends of the molecule structure. It’s like when you wring a towel, and it gets smaller and smaller. It’s something like that. We shrunk the whole molecule. It’s only three amino acids. We shrunk the molecule to make it smaller and smaller. We shrunk it so much without breaking anything that it got small enough to get inside this sugar molecule. When we got that done, it was able to get to the cell membrane. That’s when we filed the patents for it. It was a very unique technology that doesn’t exist. Even to this day, there are only a handful of products using this technology for applications in the pharmaceutical industries.

Congratulations on that. That’s fascinating and amazing. You’re able to get the glutathione into the cell membrane and into the mitochondria through that process and technology. What is the product called? What results do you see from people using it? How often do they have to use it? Is it like a daily supplement that they’re taking? Can you tell us a little bit about that side of things?

Fully Alive: Unlocking the secrets to your healthier, happier, longer life - Zach Gurick | Dr. Nayan Patel | Oxidative Stress

The product name is called Glutaryl. You don’t tell a pharmacist the name of a product. It’s going to give it a chemical name. That’s what we did. Glutaryl was the name of the product. When I first looked into the product, I was not looking for a topical product. However, I was not stuck on any dosage form. I usually took it by mouth, but the enzymes in my mouth broke down the complexes. I couldn’t get through the cell membrane. I put it through my nose.

The pH of the glutathione is a little bit acidic, so it burns the nose a little bit. It stings the nose a little bit, so it’s not going to be a long-term solution. The only access to cells I had was through skin cells. The outer layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is dead skin. It’s not living. To get through that, it’s impossible. How do you get through dead skin? It was impossible. I had to use the water channels of your skin and see if I could use that channel to at least get a little bit inside. Once it gets inside, I have access to the cell wall. Once I get access to the cell wall, it’s gone instantaneously.

That’s how we got it inside the system. I follow science. I follow the science as to what it led us to, and based on the science, it tells us that the only cell access we had was through the skin cells, which we used to get it through. Here’s the thing. Your body is oxidizing every single second. You’re going to need it for the rest of your life 24/7. Regarding the number of sprays, we recommend four sprays only. I’ve done studies where we tested 2 sprays, 4 sprays, 8 sprays, 12, and 20 of them. We found that four sprays were the most cost-effective dose that you can take without breaking the bank.

There’s still not a full replacement, but it’s pretty close to full replacement. If you use that, it stays in your body for about four to six hours. Keep in mind one thing that glutathione, when it neutralizes the free radicals, gets oxidized and remains stable inside your blood. If it gets energy from sunlight, vitamin C, or some other molecules, it can become reduced again and do the work. It’s like it’s recycling itself, so 50% of the glutathione gets recycled all the time.

You don’t have to do a lot of replacement if your diet is good, your sleeping patterns are better, if you drink water and no alcohol and don’t smoke. You will be able to recycle glutathione all the time but you need a dependency to supplement on a heavy dose. It reduces dramatically. The thing is, we found that if you use it twice a day, we’ll get you a good 8 to 12 hours of coverage. With your healthier lifestyle that we recommend to everybody, within six months or so, you should be able to get good 6 to 20 hours of coverage.

Not 24 yet because to get 24 hours of coverage, I’m getting close to supersaturation dosage. Sometimes it’s not a good idea, because you need a little bit of stress to become resilient. If you don’t exercise, you’re not going to get stronger. Simple things. You have to exercise a little bit. Walk, jog, or lift weights. Do something. That little stress sends triggers to your brain to get stronger. We need a little bit of stress. We cannot have zero stress.

Our goal is not to get to zero stress ever. We can only get 16 or 20 hours of coverage. Never a 24 hour of coverage. We observed four sprays applied two times a day. The results start getting cumulative because glutathione is only doing two things for you. It’s an antioxidant and aids in the process of conjugation and detoxification of your liver metabolites. It does two things. The secondary result, what the body does with the free time, is what you see. It’s what the doctor sees in the blood test.

Glutathione is not doing anything for that. Glutathione is not doing that work. The body is doing that work. The body doesn’t get to see that work until the basic job is taken care of, which is oxidative stress and conjugation. I want to make people understand, do not put all your faith in glutathione, thinking it’s going to fix all my problems. Glutathione is only doing two things for you, but the body, the human potential is going to fix the rest of the issues for you. To do that, you still have to have good habits. I cannot stress enough about better habits. You cannot misbehave yourself and assume that a product like glutathione is going to take care of all your problems. It doesn’t work out.

It allows your body to do what it naturally wants to do. To heal itself, and it frees up capacity to do that. You still have to put yourself in a good, healthy position, and a good environment like sleep, diet, exercise, and mindset. Cover the basics. You’ve given a lot of good analogies for us to understand. How do you feel after you take four sprays two times a day over the course of several months? What starts to change in terms of how people typically feel? If they already have those other basics covered as well, and if they’re having healthy habits otherwise.

I can share my results because those are easy for me to share. I have a lot of people. They tell me all kinds of things all the time. Half the reviews, we can’t even post, because they all say this thing cured some of my other ailments. I said, “No, it did not.” It didn’t cure anything. It allows your body to heal itself. That’s all it’s doing. I can oppose all those testimonials, all those reviews personally. I’m in my 50s. I have stopped taking all vitamins for the past 4 or 5 years. I’ve stopped taking all my vitamins. I don’t take anything. I take almost 30 to 40 pills a day, down to zero.

I take glutathione every day. I take magnesium once in a while. Lately, I’m taking magnesium every day because my eating habits are not ideal. I’m traveling a lot, so my stress levels are a little higher, and stress depletes all my magnesium, especially if I don’t have a banana. If I have a banana, I’m usually okay with that part. The first thing I noticed was increasing energy. When you take glutathione, to make glutathione, you need two molecules of ATP. When you give glutathione to your body, the body doesn’t have to produce glutathione.

You have two ATP spared, but now you have extra energy. Initially, that energy is used right away for some of the body’s reactions. In about 2 or 3 weeks, you’re going to feel like you have a little extra energy. What is that coming from? It’s not caffeine energy. It’s not like you’re going to start running and run up a mountain. You just feel good. I have a little pep in me. It’s hard to pinpoint it. It’s one of those things.

With preventive medicine, if you don’t see it working. You disregard it, thinking, “Why am I doing this again? I don’t see any benefit.” Often, people don’t realize that the fact that you are having no issues is because the body is always healing itself. It’s sad that people have to take a product only when they’re in trouble, and not until then. That’s the first thing I’ve noticed. I go to many conferences myself, and there was one doctor who was always telling me, “You sell a lot of Glutathione, so let me scan your liver for you.” I said, “No, I’m okay. I’m busy. I’m speaking over here. I’ll do this. I’m usually in and out.”

I don’t spend too much time at conferences. I go there, I do my speaking engagement, I stay for one day, meet people, and answer all the questions, then I leave. I don’t have time for my personal health. I don’t have time for that. This doctor was adamant. After two years of constantly hounding me, he caught me on a day that I said, “Fine. Tomorrow morning before the conference opens, how about if I do a liver scan?” He performed an ultrasound liver scan, checking for firmness and stiffness. He said that Glutathione helps with conjugation. If it does that, your liver should start getting better by itself.

There are F0, F1, F2, F3, F4, which indicates firmness, and S0, S1, S2, S3, which indicates fatty liver. At the age of 54, I was F0 and S0, like a teenager. The doctor said, “This is very good. You’re 54 years old. This is unusual. Fine. I want to do what you’re doing now.” I said, “I do not do anything.” I eat healthy. I sleep properly. I drink real water. No alcohol. I take glutathione. That’s all I do.

There you go. As you said, in preventative medicine, sometimes we do not notice the benefits we’re receiving because it becomes normal. We feel pretty good. When you’re taking this, you’re saying you feel a little bit extra energy, but that’s a scan of your liver showing you have the liver of an 18 or 19-year-old. Most people end up with fatty liver disease or extra fatty liver by the time they’re a certain age.

They all have a little bit of stenosis. S0 is going to S1 by the age of 25 to 30 years old, usually. Nothing alarming, but enough. It’s just there. For me to have a level way below, it’s like, “Wait a second.” I’m vegetarian on top of it. I don’t eat meat. With a carb-heavy diet, I should have something. I did not say one thing.

Your liver is the body’s filter, but it needs the right support to keep toxins moving out.

I also took amino acids. I do not use that amino acid as a supplement. It is a supplement, but I do not think it is a supplement because it is zero calories. Amino acids are providing me with the necessary building blocks for proteins. I still eat all my diet. I do eat six eggs per week or so. I do eat eggs and things like that. I’m not completely vegetarian, but I do not eat any meat, so to speak.

It’s exciting. Glutaryl is the name of the product. You said there are many other glutathione supplements out there on the market, but none of them have the same mechanism that makes it bioavailable.

By the way, I was making the injection form of glutathione for more than many years. I was making the injection form of glutathione in my pharmacy. Even the doctors think, “If I inject it into a bloodstream, my job is done. It is in your bloodstream.” It’s going to go where it’s supposed to go. I tell the doctor, “No.” How do you do that? How is it going to go where it’s supposed to go? It does not do that. There was a study done in 1991 where they injected 2,000 milligrams of glutathione into the bloodstream, and in 5 to 15 minutes, everything was in the urine.

It flushes right out because it only stays in the plasma. Not in the red blood cells, but in the plasma. The plasma gets filtered by the kidneys every 5 to 15 minutes, and everything is out the door. If that is true for a peptide like this one, what other molecules in the body are just rejecting every single thing? I do not know the answer. I do not have all those answers. If I do not know the answer, guess what? I do not take it. I do eat a proper diet though. I just make sure because diet is the most important thing.

Thanks for sharing that, too. You were telling me before you did a study to show the effectiveness of your product. You can measure the levels within the inside of the cell membranes, inside of the cells, right?

One of the local medical schools in California, I know the professors over there. We were just chit-chatting one day, and they were using it to boost the immune system because they all get shingles outbreaks as you get older. The idea was to boost his immune system while he was taking the antiviral medication because this old guy had been taking too many steroids, and his immune system is very weak.

He asked, “Can I use some glutathione to build up his immune system?” I said, “Take it every 3 or 4 hours. Use it for a few days.” That will build up his immune system. Sure enough, the shingles literally subsided within 24 to 48 hours. The professors said, “This is crazy.” It usually takes about 10 to 14 days for the shingles to go away. It basically gets dormant. It does not go away completely. I said, “The glutathione is not an antiviral. Do not get too excited about that one.”

What it does is that it builds up your immune system. The professor said, “Let me go to an IRB board. Let me present to them and say, ‘I want to do a clinical trial and see how fast it’s absorbing into the system and how fast it’s building the immune system.’” He went to the IRB. IRB took him one year to accept his application and approve it. It took him one year back and forth so many different times. Eventually they approved a human trial. It was a three-day trial. In three days, what they saw was the absorption of the glutathione was there, which is something that I suspected was happening.

That showed up right away in the blood cells, in the red blood cells, not the plasma. Not the one that fades out in fifteen minutes. It was in the blood cells. That was a good thing. What they saw was the reduction of the melanin aldehyde levels, which is MDA, or the oxidative stress markers, were reduced within one hour. Within one hour, they saw a reduction in the oxidative stress markers. It does not happen unless it’s absorbed. If they saw the absorption was happening, they saw a marker.

Now, to test the immune system, they did something differently. This time, what they did was they did not want to give somebody an infection. They took the blood in a test tube. They infected the blood with mycobacterium avium infection. Now, mycobacterium has no cure. The only hope we have is that if your immune system gets stronger, it brings it in check. They infected the blood, the test tube, with this infection, and they were measuring all 30 patients. 50 of them were taking glutathione. The 50 were taking placebo. No medicine whatsoever.

The people who were taking glutathione saw a reduction in the microbial load. I said, “What is going on here?” They measured the blood for all the samples. They saw the rise of interleukins 2 and 12, and interferon gamma, TNF alpha, all the immune markers, inflammatory markers to get rid of the infection. That was what we were noticing. This would happen all within four hours after one dose. That’s what the professors were looking at. This is insane. It just proved to us that human potential can fix your problems.

We don’t have to wait for a drug or something to come in. We need the drugs and interventions when we are way off track. If we are on track and minor bumps here and there, if you just strengthen your own immune system, if you just address basic oxidative stress and activate the conjugation pathways to detoxify your body, the body can do the rest for us.

On that note, as you think about the future, what do you see as possible? What are you most excited about in this health span, longevity revolution, all of these things that are happening, but with this technology, with glutathione being able to be delivered inside of the cells? Even beyond that, what do you see is possible and what are you most excited about as you think out into the future?

In order to give people hope, I want to share a story of my father because that story will resonate with everybody that’s on this episode. My father, at the age of 78, had Type 2 diabetes for 30 plus years, arthritis for 30 plus years, and blood pressure issues. All my life, from early childhood until whenever I can remember, he was always popping some pill for his disease management from his early 40s onward. At the age of 78, he had chest pain and found out that he had a mild infarction, and his artery was completely blocked.

The main artery was 90% blocked. I said, “He survived.” That’s the one where you’re dead instantaneously. Anyway, he scheduled his angioplasty. The cardiologists could not believe that he’s still alive. The only solution at that time was 78 years of age. The only solution was just a stent. One stent, put it in there, and that was it. Until the age of 70, he was not out of shape or anything like that, but he was not in the best shape either. He was doing some yoga and walking a little, but arthritis, diabetes, all those things were getting to him. He was retired.

He was my patient number one on glutathione. I was about three years into my research. My dad believes in his son so much. He said, “Son, if you give me this product, I’ll take it every day.” I said, “Good, I’ll give it to you,” but I was not a good son. I gave him the product, but I never kept up on his progress. Two years go by, and one day I was having dinner with him at his house, and I saw him eating sugars and carbs and just going at it. It was an Indian festival, so it was a series of festivals. Every day is a feast for him. I said, “Dad, what are you doing?” My mom passed away 5 years ago, so he was living with my brother and my sister-in-law. She would say, “If he asks me for sweets, I’m going to give him sweets every single day,” because of Indian festivals, and he wants to keep his old traditions.

I said, “Dad, please. You’re diabetic.” He said, “My sugar has been under control for two years now.” I said, “What do you mean sugar is under control?” He said, “No, my sugar is completely fine. I am doing my testing now. The doctor said that my sugar is completely gone. My insulin levels are low. I am no longer diabetic, and I’m only taking one pill a day now.” I said, “That doesn’t work. Whatever it is. Diabetes does not go away, so please don’t do all those things. Make sure you walk at least 30 minutes per day.”

Your body wants to heal itself. You just have to provide the right environment.

This time, his grin was cheek to cheek. He was so happy. I said, “Oh my gosh. What?” He said, “Look at the app.” He showed me his app on his phone. He was walking six miles per day every day. No pain. Arthritis for 40 years. I go, “Dad, what’s going on?” He said, “I have so much energy. I sleep better at nighttime now. I woke up in the morning. I’m refreshed. I put the glutathione on. I start walking. I just enjoy life.” I said, “Okay. Whatever.” I still haven’t put two and two together yet.

Another few years go by and now he’s 84 years of age. By this time, he’s already traveled to a few countries. Every year, he goes out to travel for 3 or 4 months at a time, and comes back. Eighty-four comes around, and now he has a hip issue. He wants a chiropractor to get his hip alignment, and the chiropractor said, “No, there’s nothing wrong with your hips. It’s your knees. You need to get knee replacements done. Once your knees are replaced, your hips will align back to normal.”

We went to an orthopedic surgeon and said, “My dad is having some issues with his knees.” We did an X-ray, and his knees were completely deformed. The doctor asked, “What is going on? You didn’t feel pain?” I replied, “Not so much at all. It’s bone to bone.” He said, “Arthritis for 40 years could do that to you. He needs both knee replacements, so we will do one this year and one next year.” My dad responded, “I’m 84 years of age. I know how painful the surgeries are going to be. Both knees at the same time.”

Against the doctor’s wishes, he convinced the physician to do both knee replacements at the age of 84 and scheduled his surgery. He was going to be turning 85 by the surgery time. The doctor said, “I will do it, but it’s going to take six months of recovery. I will just make sure you walk and do bicycling and all those things, but you will not be able to travel for six months.” Three and a half months later, he convinced the physician to go to India. Guess what? He had an X-ray and he was walking perfectly fine. No pain whatsoever. Everything was healing just fine. He said, “I’m completely okay. I can go back.”

The doctor looked at him and said, “I want to do what you’re doing. This is absolutely crazy.” Long story short, I went to a cardiologist every year. Before his trip, he would go to a cardiologist and check his EKG. There were no changes in his EKG for twelve years. None. No changes whatsoever. To remind you, he did not take a single pill. No blood thinners. He took a blood thinner for three months, but no cholesterol pills or anything else.

Fast forward, he is now 88 or 89 years old. He is traveling the world, to India again. The only time he got his diabetes back was during his knee surgery. He got his diabetes back for about three to four months. His sugar level had been elevated again because of stress-induced factors. It shows that diabetes does not go away. It just gets maintained without any medication. His diabetes came back for 3 or 4 months. He did not take any medications, but it just slowly subsided back to normal in about four months.

Anyway, back in India, he was traveling and eating street food. I said, “Dad, what are you doing?” He could lose bowel movement because of that. I said, “Dad, please, we are going to these countries, and I do not know what the water is like over there. You could get some poisoning and things like that. Do not eat street food. Go to a restaurant and eat real food.”

He said, “I’m dying to eat street food. Okay, fine. I will not eat anymore.” The diarrhea proceeded for about two or three days. He falls down from dehydration, falls out of the shower, and breaks his skull. He is still completely coherent. He goes to the hospital. I get a call from the hospital. They say, “Your dad’s over here.” My dad is like, “I’m fine.” No loss of memory. Nothing else is going on. There’s internal bleeding happening. One of my friends is also a neurosurgeon for the NFL.

I called him right away and he said, “What happened?” He asked, “Is he coherent? Is he talking? Does he have eye contact? Does he have a loss of memory?” I said, “Everything is perfect.” He instructed, “Do not touch him, no surgeries whatsoever. Give me a couple of hours.” In a couple of hours, he had already arranged for a neurosurgeon from the United States to visit my dad in India. He was already in India, but he made the phone calls and started making this happen.

I get a call from the neurosurgeon, who says, “I’m with your dad. He seems to be okay. There’s internal bleeding happening, but he’s completely coherent. There’s no physical damage. There’s no loss of memory. There’s no stroke. Nothing. If everything goes okay, he should be able to travel back to the United States in about ten days.” I said, “Thank God.”

My dad goes, “See? I told you. I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about it.” He made his phone calls to his brothers and sisters, to all his kids. It was late at night, he went to sleep and that was his last day. He never woke up again. They cannot stop the internal bleeding. He was 89. Think about it, from 78 to 89, he took thirteen overseas trips every single year. He was gone four months out of the year. He went to Costa Rica for a ten-day adventure trip. He went to the glacier mountains in New Zealand and walked the glaciers there. He went to Australia for two months.

Trusting the Body to Heal

He went to India almost every single year. He went to Africa. Mind you, this was during COVID times. When the whole world was shut down, guess what? He was still traveling. He had a letter he was using. He traveled everywhere. He went to Hawaii. He went to Yosemite National Park and did some hiking there. At the age of 88, 89, he was absolutely living his life. Not just merely surviving. When you asked me what the hope is for everybody else, I said, “The hope is, please trust your body. The body wants to heal itself. At any age, the question is, what are you going to do about it?”

You need to become the CEO of your own health. Do what is right for your body. Not what is right for your mind or your tongue. Do what is right for the body. Only put things in your body that the body needs, and that’s it. Trust me, the body will reward you with an extraordinary experience you can never forget.

Thank you for sharing that beautiful story about your father. I’m so glad you had those amazing years with him as well. We always talk about having a longer health span as well. He got to live that, partially thanks to your research and your work, it sounds like. That’s pretty amazing. What a dream to be able to fully live your life all the way to the very end.

Till the last day. In the last half an hour, he was taking selfies. He took selfies before he went to sleep. He said, “I want to make sure what I look like.” It was crazy. Anyway, I’m so blessed. I talk about this freely because I want every 80-year-old person to believe in themselves that they can do it. If you’re 40 or 55, you have zero excuses. Even if you’re 80, I am telling you, if you give your body some TLC, the body will respond positively for you. Please enjoy your life.

Please tell us, where can people connect with you? How can they find the product? I know you have a company called Auro Wellness.

It’s AuroWellness.com. That’s where we sell Glutaryl directly to consumers. We also retail through doctor’s offices. Many doctors’ offices stock this product because doctors use it for multiple reasons. Your local doctor’s office should have it as well.

Fully Alive: Unlocking the secrets to your healthier, happier, longer life - Zach Gurick | Dr. Nayan Patel | Oxidative Stress

The bottle that you sell on the website there, is that a one-month supply?

It’s a one-month supply.

Eight sprays a day, essentially.

Four sprays twice a day. We have two strengths. The regular strength and the extra strength. More is not better. All my clinical trials have been done on the regular product, not the plus version. If you want to have a fighting chance, the regular should be more than sufficient. That’s what I use. If the doctor wants to use the plus version, consult with them and see if your needs are going to be higher temporarily, then use the plus version.

What about your other websites or other ways for people to learn more about the great work you’re doing? You have a book, The Glutathione Revolution.

The Glutathione Revolution is the book you can get. Get the book. It’s the cheapest thing you can do to get to know my work and my story. Hopefully, that will inspire you to take control of your own health.

Your podcast will be coming out soon too, The Longevity Pharmacist?

I’m working on it. I’m hoping that I can inspire people to take charge of their own health.

Thank you for the amazing work you’re doing. Thank you for being such an inspiration for all of us. It’s been a real pleasure and a treat to have you.

Thank you for having me here.

I hope you enjoyed Dr. Patel’s excitement and exuberance for life as much as I did. What an amazing person and fascinating conversation. I know I learned a ton about glutathione. It’s something I’ve heard about for a long time, but never done a deep dive like we did. I hope you understand some of the background behind it and how it can help our bodies heal and do what they’re meant to do.

His delivery method also helps make it possible to get this to the places where it can be utilized in our body. I love that amazing story he told about his father and how he gained those last twelve years of his life to live freely and fully all the way to the very end. Glutaryl is the name of the product. You can find that on his website at AuroWellness.com.

Also, read his book, The Glutathione Revolution, if you want to do a deeper dive and understand this at a deeper level as well. I’m so excited to dive into this research myself and to try this out for myself and for my family. I hope that you will too. Also, many doctor’s offices sell that product around the country, so you can try it out that way as well. Thank you so much for tuning in.
