Smiling ear to ear, The A Cappella Group (TAG) from Cypress Lake High School took center stage at The Village Church at Shell Point Retirement Community on Friday, April 15, to share the gift of song with residents while raising money for an upcoming international competition.
The group entertained the crowd with a variety of lyrical songs, including “Short People,” “The Giving Tree,” and their original composition, “Stay Gold.” Based on the audience reaction, it is clear why this group has won dozens of awards with different soloists featured, showing off the talented stars that make the group shine.
TAG is now headed to the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) in New York City at the end of April with high hopes of bringing home a first place trophy.
“The students have been raising money since January, but didn’t have the $10,000 needed to cover the cost of the trip,” said Gary Stroh, TAG director. After hearing their story Shell Point offered to host a concert and donate 100% of the proceeds to support the group’s trip.
“I enjoyed the concert, and I really liked the director demonstrating how they put the songs together with all of the different [vocal] parts that are involved,” said Shell Point resident Jean Gilman, who attended the show, which raised $3,860 and put the group over its fundraising goal.
“The students are so thankful for Shell Point’s help, and they can’t wait to make Southwest Florida proud of their performance in New York,” said Stroh.
