SHELL POINT’S KAREN ANDERSON RECOGNIZED AS STATE HR PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR

FORT MYERS, Fla. (October 6, 2011) – Karen Anderson, SPHR, human resources director for Shell Point Retirement Community has been recognized as the 2011 HR Professional of the Year by her peers in the Human Resources Florida State Council. This annual award recognizes a human resource leader who has advanced the profession in a significant way, serves as a role model for the profession, and enhances the effectiveness of their organization.
Shell Point is home to about 2,300 residents, and is one of the largest continuing care retirement communities in the country. With more than 900 employees, Shell Point is currently one of the top 25 employers in Lee County, sitting in the 11th spot.

Anderson joined the HR department of Shell Point in 1996 and was named Director in 2001. During this time, the Shell Point employee population grew from 425 to more than 900. In her past fifteen years with the organization, she has managed a variety of important issues including the formation of a number of employee assistance programs such as special assistance for employees following Hurricane Charley, and support for Haitian employees and their families following the devastating earthquake in 2010.

“We are proud of Karen’s role in our organization and throughout the community as she recruits, trains, and supports Shell Point’s valuable employee resource. I am pleased to see her recognized by her peers with this well deserved award,” said Peter Dys, president of Shell Point.

Anderson is passionate about helping others as they seek to enter the job market and serves on the board of Dress for Success, where she educates HR professionals about ways the program can benefit their organizations and their employees. She also serves on the Employer Advisory Board for Southwest Florida Works – the state government agency responsible for developing work skills for the unemployed and underemployed, participates in an annual resume coaching event in the community, and serves as an “employer expert” regarding the human resource needs of organizations in the area to ensure they are included in transit planning.

Anderson obtained certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources in December 2009, and has served four years on the board of the southwest chapter of the Human Resource Management Association (HRMA) including chapter president in 2010. She is also past president of the Southwest Florida Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development.
