FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 30, 2010) – The Southwest Florida Symphony will once again perform two concerts at Shell Point Retirement Community in the fourth annual Southwest Florida Symphony Concert Series hosted by the community according to Dawn Boren, director of resident life. The two concert performances are Classically Simple on Tuesday, February 1, and Genesis on Tuesday, March 1, both concerts will take place at the church auditorium on The Island at Shell Point at 7:30pm.
“Residents all across Southwest Florida have shown their love and appreciation for symphony music,” said Boren. “The residents of Shell Point are pleased that the Southwest Florida Symphony performs here on our property so that they can enjoy the concerts close to home. It is just one of the many ways we try to make sure that all our residents have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of performances and presentations here.”
In the performance, Classically Simple, join the Southwest Florida Symphony as they perform three unique pieces including Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony no. 1, Symphony no. 103 “The Drumroll” by Joseph Haydn and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony has become one of his most popular and accessible works. Haydn’s Symphony no. 103 was the second to last of twelve symphonies that Haydn ever composed. Since its premiere, the “Drumroll” Symphony has been a favorite among classic music lovers and is frequently performed around the world. Along with these timeless classics, the Southwest Florida Symphony will indulge in the most charming and graceful of all works for orchestra and cello, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations as well as JC Bach’s Cello Concerto in C minor, both featuring cello soloist Mihai Marica.
The Southwest Florida Symphony returns on March 1 with Genesis. In a season celebrating 50 years, it is only natural to reflect on how much the Southwest Florida Symphony has grown from its humble and eager beginnings. As a special treat, Maestro Hall has decided to take everyone back to the time of the very first concert and recreate it for today’s audiences. You will hear the exact same program that launched the Southwest Florida Symphony in 1961, which includes the ever-popular Symphony no. 5 by Beethoven. Even if you do not know classical music, everyone recognizes the triumphant da-da-da-daah’ at the beginning. This program also included Schubert’s breathtaking Symphony no. 8 in B minor, “The Unfinished Symphony,” and Intermezzo from Harry Janos Suite by Kodaly.
