FORT MYERS, Fla. ( March 10, 2016)
Southwest Florida is encouraged to cheer on local voices to win big during an upcoming charity concert hosted by Shell Point Retirement Community. Don’t miss a single note of Cypress Lake High School’s A Cappella Group performance on Friday, April 15, at 7:15 p.m. in The Village Church.
The a cappella music genre has hit a high note in recent years, thanks to the popularity of NBC’s TV program The Sing-Off, the 2012 box office movie hit Pitch Perfect and its high-performing soundtrack, and the rise of Grammy-winning pop group Pentatonix.
Now, fans in Southwest Florida can support The A Cappella Group, a team of 23 pitch-perfect singers from Cypress Lake High School. The singers recently scored a coveted spot to compete at the International Champions High School A Cappella Finals in New York City.
The only catch? These Lee County teenagers need help from hometown supporters to reach the Big Apple. “The students have been raising money since January, and it just isn’t enough to cover the $10,000 cost of this trip,” said Gary Stroh, The A Cappella Group director.
Enter Shell Point Retirement Community, a resort-style retirement community of more than 2,400 seniors that includes an emphasis on music, the arts, and intergenerational interaction as part of its regular lifestyle programming.
“Shell Point offered to throw a charity concert, letting the group showcase its talent for Southwest Florida,” said Stroh. “We can’t wait for the opportunity. And just think – to fill the 1,000 seat auditorium at $10 per ticket means we’ll be on our way to New York in no time!”
After the performance, guests can purchase CDs and mingle with the singers during a meet-and-greet reception. “You could not ask for a more perfect opportunity for intergenerational interaction,” said Shell Point’s Resort Services Manager Heather Battey. “Plus, qualifying for an elite international championship speaks to the caliber of these young musicians, and we want to see them take their rightful place on big stage.”
Tickets cost $10, and every penny will be donated directly to meet the group’s $10,000 bill for their upcoming International Champions High School A Cappella Finals in late April. After the performance, purchase CDs and mingle with the singers during a special meet-and-greet reception. For more information about this event, call (239) 454-2290.
