SHELL POINT ACADEMY OFFERS CLASS ON MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART

FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 4, 2012) – The Academy at Shell Point invites the public to attend a two session presentation on Modern and Contemporary Art. This event, Why was Modern Art Significant? and How do You Understand Contemporary Art?, will take place on Friday, January 27, in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands in Shell Point Retirement Community. Space is very limited, so tickets are required to attend, and can be purchased for $25 a piece by calling (239) 454-2054.

Lecturer Joanna Coke will take us through the redefinition of art from the 1890s to the present in this two session lunch and learn that shows us how the world’s cultural changes affected the artistic movements. In addition to the two sessions on how art is significant and how to understand it, attendees will enjoy a boxed lunch with the presenter.

“Art appreciation truly is ‘in the eye of the beholder’,” said Teri Kollath, Manager of Academy and Volunteer Services. “We are so happy to offer a class that places both modern and contemporary art into the historical perspective of cultural changes, especially with such an engaging presenter.”

In the first session, Why was Modern Art Significant?, learn why art radically changed after centuries of artistic academic training into the multi-styles of art from the late 1890’s through to the 1940’s. See how the world’s cultural changes effected these artistic movements. During session two, How do You Understand Contemporary Art?, attendees will see how many ways cultural changes and artists’ interpretations redefine art. Learn why “out with the old and in with the bizarre” has become the contemporary art of today.
