FORT MYERS, Fla. (Sept. 25, 2018) – The Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point Retirement Community invites the Southwest Florida community to attend its October Academy classes, which will feature educational discussions on world explorers, public policy and one of the ocean’s most abundant marine turtle species. Classes will take place on Oct. 8, Oct. 22 and Oct. 25 at Shell Point in Fort Myers.

The first discussion, entitled “How Columbus Almost Did Not Discover America,” will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, exploring the life and legacy of Marco Polo. Florida SouthWestern State College professor Adrian Kerr will discuss the many setbacks suffered by Polo, how perilously close he came to failure and the great impact he had on the young Genoese sailor, Christopher Columbus.

Shell Point will also present “Amendments on the Ballot for Florida’s Midterm Election” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, led by Clara Anne Graham, president of the League of Women Voters of Lee County. The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. During the 90-minute presentation, Graham will share an understanding of major public policy issues and proposed amendments that are slated for the upcoming ballot.

The final Academy class for October, entitled “Sea Turtles,” will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, led by Kristie Anders, education director at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. Attendees will learn about the loggerhead turtle; the Kemp’s Ridley turtle, which spends its juvenile years in the sea grasses of Pine Island Sound; and a very rare, 700-pound leatherback that chose Sanibel’s beach for a nesting event just a few years ago. Anders’ presentation will also incorporate new information acquired from a sea turtle geneticist.

Ticket to attend each session are $10, and can be purchased by calling 239-489-8472. To learn more, visit www.shellpoint.org.
