Another partner is Dr. Gary Brecka, who’s one of our leading longevity experts and specialists as well in functional medicine. I’m excited for you guys to hear about 10X Health with Dr. Cas. Let’s jump in.

Fully Alive: Unlocking the secrets to your healthier, happier, longer life - Zach Gurick | Dr. Castel Santana | 10X Health

Dr. Cas, thank you so much for being on the show. It’s a privilege and a pleasure to have you here. I’m excited for our readers to learn about 10X Health and the amazing things that you guys are doing. This is an incredible resource, and I’m excited for more people to learn about it. Can you maybe tell us to start with what are the primary services that 10X Health provides to people?

Introduction To 10x Health And Precision Medicine

Thank you for having me on. The topics that we’ll discuss are near and dear to my heart and how I practice day-to-day and how we practice at 10X and what should be a mainstay in medicine and how we move forward with everybody’s health in a very proactive manner. At 10X, we take the position of looking more in depth at data points.

We take a precision approach to your wellness, so a bioidentical approach to your wellness at that minute precision area where we are looking at genetics and massive amounts of data points when it comes to lab work in your initial screening with us. If I had to boil it down into one sentence of what we do at 10X, it’s precision functional medicine. Again, we are looking at root cause disease using a lot of precision genetics, but also lab values that we gather as well.

We have the initial blood tests. You are testing for biomarkers in our blood, and then there’s the genetic test as well as your two starting points. I’m a client of 10X Health. I got my blood drawn, and I’m looking forward to getting my results of all the biomarkers and then the customized precision approach to what my deficiencies are and how that can be altered and helped by the supplements and everything else that you guys provide. Tell us a little bit about the blood biomarkers. How many biomarkers are you testing for? What kinds of things are we looking for?

The Limitations of Western Medicine

Let’s start with what’s wrong. A massive thing that is wrong in allopathic or Western medicine is the ability to collect those data points. Doctors and providers are limited to being a reactive system versus a proactive system. A lot of that has to deal with the initial assessment and the ability to gather that. It’s dictated by insurance. When you go see a regular primary care, and you don’t come in with diagnoses, your insurance most likely is not going to pay for those data points and those labs that would be initially needed for us to make decisions on your health.

When you go see a primary care and say, “We check your labs every year,” and they check five things. They say, “You are healthy. Go home. Kick your feet up.” One of the problems is the amount of data points that they are collecting. It’s very limited. Number two, Western medicine tends to practice within these reference ranges and leave people low optimal. They are like, “it’s in a normal range. You are normal. Go home.”

That’s not the case with us. With functional medicine, we want to optimize these things, and we are looking at a lot more data points. If your general practice is looking at five data points a year, five lab values a year, we are looking at over 100. We are diving deeper into some basic nutrients that your body might be lacking like vitamin D.

A lot of times doctors don’t even get that. We are looking at inflammation, which is very important to how we age. We are looking at different metrics for inflammation, and a full hormone analysis from the adrenal glands to your sex hormones to your thyroid. We are looking very in depth into these things, and then it’s how we gather that information and put it together. Again, in functional medicine, we put that information together differently.

Maybe tell us a little bit about that. How then can we optimize our hormones, for example, or out of those 100 plus data points, what happens next?

Our goal is to optimize every metric that we find within those values, whether or not it’s a hormone level or something going on with cortisol or something we may see in the gut. We want to optimize all these areas. There’s certain areas that in health and wellness are a little more important, but one of the reasons we start with genetics as well, and we look at so many metrics with genetics, with the precision genetic testing is because initially, we want to know how does your body react to certain foods.

You may be eating something that may not be giving you an intolerance or an allergy, but it may over time not be the right food for you to be eating. Those are data points that we collect, and if you think of it as this big picture, what are we trying to accomplish with optimizing all these labs and your genetics. It’s about inflammation and managing chronic inflammation. As we age, that’s very important. It’s called inflammaging. The process of aging properly is mitigating a lot of that inflammaging. This cellular type of inflammation. This chronic type of inflammation that then leads to chronic disease, again, that’s at the crux of everything that we are looking at, is to mitigate that.

All these labs and genetics are really about inflammation. Managing chronic inflammation is crucial, especially as we age. The process of aging properly involves mitigating that inflammation Share on X

Mitigating the inflammaging. We have the blood test, and then also the precision genetic test you mentioned are the two primary tests you start with, speaking, when someone comes to 10X Health. How many genes are you looking at?

There are 54 different genes and 66 different genetic SNPs. Together, when you put the algorithm together. For everybody, it could equate to trillions of different results. When you look at that again, it’s like, “What are the foods that potentially could be problematic in the future?” These are even clean foods. It’s not processed foods that we are looking at. It’s also clean food.

When I did mine, it was very shocking. It was like, “I can’t eat these certain types of meats.” It doesn’t make me feel bad, but over time, it’s not an optimal food for me. I’m either not getting nutrients from it, or not breaking it down properly. Again, it’s mitigating that chronic inflammation potential. You also, from that test, get a lot of information about how your body uses nutrients. You get methylation testing, which is the base of our genetics as well.

It’s how we use raw material through that methylation pathway. There are a lot of different genes in there that can have different symptoms that pop out, but at the base is how do we use this raw material? The analysis from that can give you a bioidentical vitamin regimen from that, which is pretty cool. The genetic testing, the initial full functional lab panel is important, but we also focus a lot on the gut. It doesn’t matter if you see a functional doc from California to Maine, we all talk about gut health.

Gut Health As A Cornerstone Of Wellness

It probably is one of the most important and most researched areas in medicine, but one of the most important areas for mitigating that chronic inflammation, because 80% of your immune system is in the gut. If you have a bad gut and it’s not working properly, you are going to have some chronic inflammation and some chronic disease that stems from that. That’s part of our testing, too. If we could test everybody’s gut, we would love to test everybody’s gut.

You can start by initially healing the gut or fixing it. Now you are absorbing more nutrients. That’s part of what you guys are doing as well, that gut microbiome analysis then you are creating supplements that can help heal the gut and resolve deficiencies.

You have to remember, it’s a whole system. We tend to make things in silos in Western medicine, it’s like specialty, but it’s all a big system. Optimizing even methylation is going to help fix your gut. Optimizing hormones is going to help fix your gut, things like cortisol and those sorts of things. All of it’s going to work together with optimal gut health as well.

Maybe explain for our readers a little bit about what happens after we get the test, after we get the panels? How do you guys go about creating the supplements or the other resolutions or helping to solve those issues that come up in the testing?

Custom Supplement Plans Based On Genetic And Lab Results

All of the specialty tests come with an option of discussing with a provider. If you do your labs alone, then I’d go over that with you and we’d optimize what we find, either deficient or suboptimal. We are going over that at the initial visit, getting a full history. There might be things that pop out in your history that we also want to tackle that’s not in your labs. For instance, talking about detoxing and how we detox. Initially, when we get those results, you have the option of meeting individually because some of these specialty tests take a long time to go over, like your precision genetic test is 400 pages of information.

You got to spend some time going over that with one of our specialists. It’s broken down to where the layperson could go through it. Even when my wife did it, she was able to go through it and pick it out, “I get it.” We put it together very easily for that layperson to pick up and say, There’s green. There’s red. There’s in between.” You can pick up on how we explain it in the packets on what to do next. If you do end up having a consultation with one of our specialists for the precision genetics test, they are going to go over those results.

They are going to give you the option, once you read those results, to have that bioidentical vitamin pack made for you. That’s what’s cool about what we do with our precision testing, genetics, and precision outcomes. You can make your vitamin care very specialized to you and your genetics. With those results, you get to say, “I want a vitamin sachet that covers all of these potentials.”

Not necessarily deficiencies at this time, but vitamins that my body’s always going to have trouble with and need. It’s packed with a nutrient, an AG1-esque type component with your fruits and veggies type thing. You get a lot of benefits packed into these bioidentical sachets. That’s a cool option for this bioidentical healing and care that we are giving to our patients, for sure.

You guys are using a special microbead in those sachets as well that is more readily absorbed and bioavailable.

The technology behind the microbeads is the absorption. Let’s say you take a regular vitamin, and it’s a good vitamin. You might be absorbing 15% to 20% of those, but when we can bypass certain things and allow you to absorb 80% to 85%, you are going to get a lot more benefit from that.

After I did my genetics test and blood testing, I can have a vitamin sachet of microbeads that are highly absorbed that is made for my body, for me, Zach. It’s going to help me optimize every part of my gut health and cellular health. It’s going to help fight inflammation and inflammaging, and help me optimize my hormone levels, methylation, and all of those components.

It doesn’t cover everything, but it does cover, I would say, 90% of what we are going to find and offer vitamins for anyway. There are certain things you can’t put in a sachet. If you need fish oil, omega-3s, or something like that. There might be some separates, but it’s going to cover the majority of basics those methylation pathways, basic nutrients, and things you may even find in organ meat capsules or something where it’s packed with nutrients.

Maybe share a story or two of how you’ve seen someone come into 10X and then, 3 or 6 months later, after these protocols, what transformation can be expected?

There are all sorts. There are people that have weight to lose and they have got metabolic dysfunction and hormonal imbalances. We have a lot of middle-of-the-road age patients that are 40 to 55 or so, men and women that are dealing with hormone imbalances. It’s perimenopause moving into menopause and even menopause, where they are feeling drained. They are not having the motivation. Maybe they are losing the sex drive but they are not as sharp anymore. They are getting that brain fog.

We go through those metrics and say, “Where do we see inflammation? Where do we need to optimize hormones?” We have a lot of those cases of, “I’m tired.” That’s probably our biggest complaint. Even in my practice, it’s fatigue, tiredness, or losing that edge. We get them optimized, especially with hormones and bioidentical hormones.

One of our biggest complaints is fatigue. People are so tired and they're losing that edge. Share on X

We optimize those channels and pathways, and then within three months, they are feeling a lot better. That process continues, too. At that six-month mark, we are hearing even better outcomes. If weight loss is in that, then we are seeing goals being met with weight loss in a proper way. We monitor those things very closely, especially with weight loss and the certain types of medications that we use for that.

Solving most people’s primary issues or they are feeling a lot better. We don’t have to go through life feeling tons of brain fog and tiredness. We can be energetic and vibrant, even as we age. I’d love to hear a little bit as well, and share with our readers about the Superhuman Protocol. You have the red-light therapy, PEMF mat, the hyperoxygenate exercise, and the red-light therapy boot chambers as well. Maybe break that down for us a little bit and what you guys see there.

Optimizing Mitochondrial Function

There are lots of benefits to each one of those individually. We tie them together, and it goes down to optimizing mitochondrial function. Remember when we talked about inflammaging? If you go to any biohacking conference, A4M or anything like that, when they talk about inflammation, they are talking about optimizing mitochondrial function at the crux of that.

Each one of those has been shown to improve mitochondrial function in certain ways. PEMF is Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields, and we are all around them. If we are sitting next to our computers or a tower or something, we are getting EMF. We want the right type of EMF, and there are different frequencies that you want to use to optimize health.

It’s called an L for extremely low to low and mid-levels, are what you are going to find in a mat. That’s going to have a frequency around what’s called a Schumann resonance, and that’s what the earth’s frequency is. That’s why grounding, going out and touching the earth is so important for animals. As humans, we don’t do it as often as we should. The data I have seen is maybe 3% of us touching the earth that we are supposed to, or maybe it’s just Americans, but we need that frequency. We need to discharge and that frequency. The PEMF mat harnesses multiple frequencies within that low to mid-range. You get a lot of benefit from that.

When you lay on a PEMF mat, not only are you discharging. You are grounding yourself, which is also important. We build up these negative ions throughout the day. If we don’t touch the earth, it can lead to that inflammation that we are talking about. It can lead to your body being a little bit more acidic, which then disease thrives in. Infection, cancer, and disease thrive in an acidic environment. It allows you to become more alkaline when you are on a PEMF mat through that process. PEMF is great.

You start the process, and I might not be going backwards, but you start the process with EWOT. EWOT is Exercise With Oxygen Therapy. You are hitting that exercise. You might be hitting a VO2 max. You are pushing yourself cardiopulmonary-wise, and hyper-oxygenating your system. When you think about our protocol, you think about the process of what oxygen does and something that we have talked about and Gary’s talked about, the presence of oxygen being the absence of disease. You want to get that oxygen in.

Most of us, as we age, we lose that oxygen component. You are starting with EWOT. You are getting that oxygen in, working on your cardiopulmonary reserve, then you jump into the infrared. The theory behind that is now that you are hyper-oxygenated, now you need to push that into the mitochondria where it needs to be used. Infrared light has been shown to do that. Not only does it help with the association of oxygen into the mitochondria by kicking out certain things. It also allows for replication of more mitochondria.

The Superhuman Protocol: Infrared, PEMF, and Oxygen Therapy

You are getting the ability to use more oxygen for energy, and decrease that overall burden. It’s called reactive oxygen species and burden reduction. That inflammation is coming down as well. Those are the first two things, and then the PEMF, as I said before. That’s our superhuman protocol. We consider not only that to be the superhuman protocol, but the testing that we do as well. You can do those things, but if we are not fixing what we find in your labs, your genetics, and your gut, then we consider the whole thing our superhuman protocol.

Most people can gain access to that PEMF mat, the hyper-oxygenated exercise, and the red-light therapy at one of your centers. People can also purchase those for their homes if they wanted to, or in a community like ours. Is that something that you personally utilize? Are you going through that protocol on a regular basis?

I lay on my PEMF mat almost nightly. I enjoy it because what it also does is help you with your brain frequency. We have delta, theta, alpha, beta frequency of the brain. As we are talking, we are in alpha frequency, or we should be. Our brain should be converging in alpha. As you relax and go to bed, you are getting into that theta-delta realm. It helps with that process as well.

There are other PEMF mats that have little gauges or things like that you can focus on specific frequencies, which is pretty cool. I do mine at night. I do infrared probably four days a week, more like an infrared sauna, but I do lay on the infrared bed when I can. It’s probably a lot more powerful, than my infrared sauna is, but I frequent those techniques for sure.

When you step out after going through a superhuman protocol, it includes everything, but those three protocols, do you immediately feel more energized, or is it something that takes time? Do some people start their day like that every day?

That’s what we are focused on building, that component where people can come in early in the morning. Maybe before work or before their day starts, and hit that. I would say 100% of people that are going through that process are feeling that improvement. It’s subjective to what they are feeling, but they are at least telling us, “I feel good after this.” That’s the goal, to have these set up so people can go in and utilize that protocol as much as possible.

Are there people that are more advanced in age that are finding great benefits from a 10X Health protocol as well?

Yes. You are going to benefit from any age. What I have seen, and this is maybe anecdotal from what I have seen, when we have clients that are 60 plus, they tend to feel the results a little bit more. Maybe it’s because they have gone longer with a deficiency or something that we are optimizing, but they tend to go from that lower level to like, “I feel great again,” and they almost feel like they have gotten their life back. This is a knock on the medical system, but for years, you’d go in and see your doctor at 50, tired and worn down. They’d be like, “Your labs look good, so you are normal aging. Go home and die.”

That’s not what we want for people. It’s not what I want for myself. We are seeing this narrative shift. More people are becoming more knowledgeable about functional medicine and what we do at 10X. They are building that hope back. They are like, “I’m 60 and I can move again. I have great energy. I have got my sex drive back, and all these things that allow me to age well. I’m getting off medications.” Those are our goals. We want you to age well, be happy, and hopefully not be on a bunch of medications.

I have heard some things as well, maybe on the horizon, about customized meal plans based on my blood biomarkers and my genetics. 10X Health could create meal plans that could be shipped to my house someday. Even at a restaurant, I could order meals made for me, and then my wife could have meals made for her. Is that still on the horizon?

Bioidentical Therapies And Precision Health

The options are endless when it comes to looking at data results from our genetic panel. It could be bioidentical meals or bioidentical aesthetics. There could be bioidentical creams and things that come out from this. These are things that we are working on and thinking about for sure.

It’s like I have a skincare that’s made for my skin. That’d be amazing.

It’s cool what we can do with this data, and also the bioidentical IVs and the bioidentical vitamins. That’s the start. We have got those two already, where if you went and got your precision genetics test, you can get your sachet of vitamins and nutrients. On top of that, you then could take your QR code to any Revive X in the world and get a precision IV based on your needs and your genetics.

Those could be tweaked a bit. If you came in traveling dehydrated, or hungover or something, those could be tweaked, but it’ll have your bioidentical code to that. It’s pretty cool. It’s revolutionizing that industry with IV care, which is huge. The IV clinics are everywhere. Now we are using your genetics to give you what you need.

For you personally, is that something that you are doing as well? Are you getting bioidentical IVs once a month?

Yes, I have had them in the past. I wouldn’t say as frequent as once a month, but I’m building a Revive X in my own clinic. It will be something that I will be able to offer my patients here in my clinic as well.

On the horizon, skincare made for us and meal plans delivered to our door made for us, as I said, individualized and precision. This is exciting. What else is on the horizon for 10X? What are you most excited about?

Growing in a lot of different directions. Our clinic space is growing, which is nice to have. We do care in all 50 states. We have providers licensed in all 50 states, but we are expanding our brick-and-mortar space as well for people to come in and experience the Superhuman Protocol and advance in that. One thing that would be very fun to work on, and something that we have thought about, are these healthy living spaces.

Even in your field, where you have communities of aging population. How do you build that to be a full wellness experience? How do you build these healthy living spaces that touch all these spaces where it’s not just the Superhuman Protocol, but we are also living in clean environments? We have got everything from clean lights to EMF blockers to water filtrations. There are so many things that we can do with that. I know 10X wants to be involved and working on some ideas. That would be some growth areas I feel like we are excited about.

We’ve been thinking about Healthy Living Spaces, especially in your field with aging communities. How do you create a full wellness experience—spaces that go beyond the Superhuman Protocol and ensure we're all living in clean, healthy environments? Share on X

I’m super excited about that. We’d love to test all those things here, so I’ll keep this in mind for sure. This is amazing stuff that you guys are doing. It’s changing people’s lives and helping us live, as we talk about here, unlocking the secrets to your healthier, happier, and longer life. You guys are doing that. I’m excited for our readers to learn about 10X Health and this amazing resource, and there’s so much on the horizon still to come. Where can people go to find more information or to find a center? As you said, you are in all 50 states. Is it pretty easy to track?

It’s pretty easy, scheduling an appointment online through our website, 10X Health Systems. If you Google 10X Health, it’s going to be the first thing that pops up. Through our website, there’s the ability to schedule. That’s usually your first process, to get testing, get on the schedule, and the turnaround’s pretty quick.

In 2024, as business grows very quickly, scaling sometimes is fun to manage, but as we have been able to manage that, the turnaround time is pretty quick. I stay pretty busy with patients, but people that get on my panel, it’s usually within a couple of weeks of getting your lab tests done, you are then sitting down and going over those results. It’s a pretty quick turnaround.

I’m excited for what’s ahead, optimizing our health now so that we can continue to age well and stay healthy as we age and extend our health span.

Future of Healthcare — From Reactive To Proactive

We need this change in healthcare. We are seeing it with new policies and the direction that we are thinking, at least in going for healthcare. Again, a lot of it has to revolve around that initial data collection. There’s a lot of things we can do, even at childbirth. If every child had a methylation test or even a precision genetics test, but even methylation, it would change how we treat certain disorders, childhood disorders, things like ADD and ADHD, and other detox issues.

Those are easy tests. They don’t cost the system much money versus having a child on medication from an early age on. Again, with what we are doing at 10X, we flipped that from being a reactive model to a proactive and preventative model. We are talking about an older aging population, but it could start way younger, too.

Are you saying you could test a newborn baby and determine if they might have ADHD or ADD or other things?

With methylation, there’s genetic tests that every child goes through. If you add in a methylation test to that newborn panel, you could change the outcome for so many lives. Parents want that. They don’t want their kids to be on medication, but if you can fix certain pathways within methylation, you can optimize those outcomes.

With more and more people learning about this preventative, proactive, precision healthcare model, what are the chances that in the near future, maybe some of this could be covered by insurance, some of the things that 10X Health is doing?

I’m always going to be optimistic and hope that we move in that direction. There are a lot of factors at play there. Some of it’s going to have to be regulatory. With technology shifts, we are going to see prices come down. For instance, if you went and got a full functional medicine lab panel from LabCorp or anywhere else, the cost through your insurance is usually ten times the amount that you could get at other labs. They have better technology. It’s going to be technology-based on that. Once that happens and they see the costs of gathering this data are not that expensive, it should be covered by insurance. That’s my wishful thinking. I hope so. If I was in charge of that, that’s how I would look at that.

Hopefully, that’s in the not-too-distant future, but in the meantime, it’s not too expensive. What better to spend money on than health? If we have a little bit of extra resources, then go get these blood tests done and get our genetics tested here at 10X Health and optimize your health now. We want to live every day to the fullest and take advantage of the moments that we have Dr. Cas, this is amazing. Thank you so much for the work that you are doing to transform people’s lives. I’m excited and optimistic about what’s ahead for you guys at 10X Health and excited for our readers to have learned about this amazing resource. Any parting thoughts as we wrap up here?

I appreciate your time as well. We have a great team at 10X. It’s not one person, or one provider or anything. We have an amazing team and people that work super hard to make the experience worth it, and as we go along, educate the patient on what things we can optimize in their lives. Maybe not all around their lab analysis or things like that.

We want to work with the whole person in optimizing anything from things like food, hormones, exercise, and mental wellness and what they are doing for those sorts of things. We are excited for the growth that we have already accomplished, but then what’s to come. We see ourselves being a pioneer and at the tip of the spear when it comes to patient health and wellness. Hopefully, for many years to come.

We want to work with the whole person, optimizing everything from food and hormones to exercise and mental wellness, and supporting what they're doing in those areas. Share on X

Thank you for being at the tip of the spear. We appreciate you so much, and thanks for coming on, Dr. Cas.

Thank you, sir.

What a great episode and a great conversation we had with Dr. Cas. I hope that you learned a few new things, and you’ll be as excited as I am to check out 10X Health. As I said, I’m a client. I have had my blood work tested there. I’m excited to get my panel back and to review that and to learn what the deficiencies are that I have. I’m interested in getting my own sachet produced of customized vitamins made for me, my gut, my genetics, and my blood deficiencies as well.

We learned about these amazing supplements that they are making using these specialized microbeads. We learned about how they can help us shift our gut microbiome and make it as healthy as possible, and how the methylation and precision genetics tests all work together as a system to help create what they call the superhuman protocol, as well as the PEMF mat, the red-light therapy, and advanced hyper-oxygenated exercise treatments. This superhuman protocol we can go through to optimize our health and energy at any age.

I’m also excited about one of the things we talked about in our conversation, creating these healthy living spaces. Some of the things on the horizon involve creating healthy spaces that reduce the amount of toxins and electromagnetic frequencies that we are exposed to. I’m super interested and waiting with anticipation for what’s going to come here in the future. I hope that we can become a space here at Shell Point that is a healthy living space as well. I hope that you will go check out 10X Health. I’m excited about it, and I hope that you are too. Thanks for reading. Have a great day.
